How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing Menopause Care

  • 4 min read

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere—and the healthcare space is no exception.

This may be a good thing for women traversing menopause. Women in midlife have long been underrepresented and understudied in health research, and some experts believe AI could help level the playing field.

Let’s look at how women are using AI in regard to menopause symptom management and what you should know about AI-driven menopause support and resources.

Bridging the Gap: Menopause Care with AI

Nearly 6,000 women enter menopause per day in the United States. By definition, menopause is a single moment in time which is  officially marked when a woman experiences one year with no menstrual period.1 With this hormonal transition comes a host of symptoms inclusive of disturbances in temperature regulation (aka, hot flashes), mood swings, disrupted sleep, and decreased cognition, metabolism, bone health, libido, and more.2

Now, researchers are harnessing the power of AI to not only potentially help women manage symptoms and develop care plans, but also to determine who is most at risk for certain comorbidities often tied to menopause and postmenopause.3 The following are a few ways healthcare leaders are leaning on the power of AI to better assist women transitioning through menopause.

AI in Risk Assessment and Disease Prevention During Menopause

There’s no predicting how each woman will experience menopause or what symptoms she will face, but certain risk factors that become more prevalent during this time may increase the chances of developing comorbidities —or coexisting conditions—such as a decline in cognition, mental health, or bone health.4,5,6

This is where the combination of artificial intelligence and menopause care comes into play. Using massive datasets from clinical, genetic, and lifestyle data, AI models can help healthcare providers determine which women are most at risk for conditions associated with the decline in estrogen through menopause.7

In one study, an algorithm powered by AI machine learning models helped to assess the risk for osteoporosis—a condition in which bones become weak, brittle, and vulnerable to breaks—for more than 25,000 women as they approached menopause.8,9 Another study suggests AI could potentially help to identify women with severe cognitive decline during the menopause transition, opening potential pathways to early intervention and protection of cognitive health throughout the menopause transition and beyond.10

AI for Menopause Symptom Management

Ever wonder what was happening in your body during your first hot flash? Curious about how your lifestyle may influence the frequency or intensity of them? It’s possible AI can help answer these questions.

AI is not only using data from genetic markers, hormone levels, and behaviors to detect possible biological changes, but it’s also offering support through symptom management.11,12

Newly-developed chatbots like Ask Empress, Pro Mujer, and Menodoctor offer personalized, real-time support and information related to menopause.13,14,15 These AI-powered bots are able to interact with users and help them to track metrics like sleep habits and hot flash frequency to suggest personalized tips for navigating menopause.16

AI for Personalized Hormone Care During Menopause

While it’s true that healthcare providers rarely receive enough training in menopause care and symptom management, more than a billion of the world’s population is projected to enter menopause by 2030.18

Fortunately, powerful minds are collaborating to fill this gap in care (and knowledge) with apps tailored specifically for women in menopause. Midday, for instance, uses resources provided by the Mayo Clinic technology platforms to deliver education about menopause, including how to determine if hormone therapy may be right for you.18 Women can even connect the app to their smartwatches to receive targeted insights and symptom detection in real time.19

Managing Menopause Symptoms and Care Using AI

AI technology may provide some benefits to women navigating menopause symptoms. However, it’s important to note that if your symptoms feel unmanageable, it’s best to see your primary care physician or another healthcare provider. A physician can run additional tests to determine the cause of certain symptoms and decide whether additional treatment is necessary.

**Remember, AI technology can be used to help support your menopause care plan and symptom management, but it does not and should not take the place of an actual visit with your healthcare provider, as they know your unique medical history best.**
