Rethinking Your Nightly Glass: Alcohol & Your Menopause Symptoms

Thinking of reaching for a glass of wine, or maybe even two after a long day?

So are nearly 30% of adults in the United States—with more than half feeling confident that their evening night cap will prevent issues with sleep.1 Further research has revealed that some women are turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism for other midlife menopause symptoms.2

While perimenopause and wine might, at first glance, seem like the perfect pair, science suggests otherwise.

Here, we’ll explore the relationship between alcohol and menopause and break down the ways alcohol may actually worsen menopause symptoms.

What Science Says About Alcohol and Menopause

Hot flashes. Night sweats. Sleeplessness. Stress dreams

The list of ways menopause may hijack your sleep and interfere with daily life feels long and relentless. It’s no wonder that one in three women in perimenopause—the stage of menopause associated with the most hormone volatility—reports drinking alcohol to cope with daily life, as well as their symptoms.3,4,5

But, does it work? Does an adult bedtime beverage actually help with sleep? And could alcohol possibly be a productive way to navigate ever-growing menopause symptoms like big worries, small libido, and a body that keeps changing?

Does Alcohol Worsen Menopause Symptoms?

Unfortunately, according to science, alcohol doesn’t measure up to its promised potential as a sleep aid, stress reliever, or generally useful tool against menopause symptoms. In fact, it may worsen some of them. Here’s how.

Menopause Sleep and Alcohol

Up to 60% in perimenopause report difficulties with sleep, while a similar number experience sleep issues following menopause.6

It may be tempting to troubleshoot your sleeplessness using any means possible to wind down at night. But experts warn that, while alcohol may help you fall asleep, it won’t help you stay asleep.7 In fact, science shows that alcohol consumption may delay or shorten the REM (rapid eye movement) cycle of sleep—the one that ideally accounts for a quarter of the adult sleep cycle and impacts healthy brain development, emotional processing, memories, and eventual wakefulness.8,9

Additionally, alcohol may hasten the time it takes to fall into deep sleep, throwing off natural sleep cycles and increasing the risk of fragmented sleep for the remainder of the night.10 Furthermore, research shows that frequent alcohol consumption increases risk of obstructive sleep apnea and conditions related to chronic poor sleep, like high blood pressure, depression, stroke, and diabetes.11,12

A glass of wine every so often isn’t a huge concern, experts say, but those reaching for a cocktail every evening to drift off to sleep should potentially consider different ways of winding down.13

Alcohol and Hot Flashes

It seems like hot flashes have become the hallmark symptom of perimenopause—and for good reason. More than 75% of women in perimenopause experience hot flashes, which cause sudden, intense waves of heat, flushed skin, and a racing heart for minutes at a time.14

Unfortunately, research has revealed that alcohol can act as a trigger for both hot flashes and their nocturnal equivalent, night sweats.15 Even without menopause, alcohol use may cause an abrupt rise in body temperature, cueing blood vessels beneath the skin to dilate and trigger hot flashes.16

Experts say several variables during midlife play a role as to how quickly and intensely women feel these effects. Tolerance to alcohol in midlife declines due to: 17,18,19

  • Slowed metabolism, meaning alcohol can remain in the body for longer
  • Lower muscle mass, reducing the body’s ability to hold onto alcohol
  • Increased body fat, which may lead to increased concentration of alcohol in the bloodstream
  • Medications that interact with alcohol, like antidepressants, opioids, and sleep medication

Alcohol and Mood in Menopause

It’s no secret that your emotions may be all over the map during menopause. Shifting hormones in midlife may trigger a wide array of emotional changes, from occasional sadness to all out rage.20

Generations before us have turned to alcohol to manage such ailments. While a glass of wine may offer a temporary reprieve from our own feelings, science shows that overdoing it may be counterintuitive.

For one, findings suggest that frequent, excessive alcohol use is closely linked with developing mood disorders like depression.21 Even one night of heavy drinking may impact sleep and leave you tired, irritable, and sad the morning after.22

The impact of menopause on mental health even with minimal alcohol consumption has led most experts to recommend eliminating alcohol from daily routines or limiting it to a glass or two per week.23

Real Relief from Menopause Symptoms Is Possible

Alcohol may feel like a quick fix for poor sleep, stress, and other uncomfortable menopause symptoms, but science shows that there are other ways to manage. But if you’re struggling to manage disruptive menopause symptoms and they’re continually impacting your quality of life, it’s best to check in with your healthcare provider.
